Apartments for Rent

by Sue Yee on April 21, 2007

If you're in the market for a new place to live, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the searching process. When you look for apartments for rent, it can be difficult to know where to start sometimes.

Finding Apartments for Rent

Many people begin by getting the local paper, opening to the classified ads section and checking out what's available. This is a common approach, but it may not be the best option. First of all, you have to waste a lot of time wading through places that may not be in the area you're interested in. Second, you waste even more time reading ads for places you would never consider because of key amenities they might be missing (like a deck, a dishwasher, a laundry room, an office space, or whatever else you might need).

How can you weed out the places you don't want to rent? One great way to find the best rentals for your situation is to turn to an online apartment rental guide. These sites usually allow you to target your search based on specific requirements, such as cost, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and even location. By relying on this more targeted search, you'll narrow your options down without wasting a lot of time reading about the places you don't want.

Hit the Open Road in Search for Apartments for Rent

Another good way to find a nice rental is to get in your car (or on your bike, on the train or whatever your means of transportation) and check out the neighborhood you want to live in. Many landlords reliably post a sign any time they have a vacancy, so you can just drive (or bike, or walk) around the neighborhood, check out what's available and make a note of it.

You'd be even smarter to grab your cell phone and a digital camera before you start this hunt. You can call the number on the sign if you think you're interested in the place and find out more from the landlord. They might even be available to show you the place, but if not, you can go ahead and schedule a walk-through at this point. If no one answers, you can leave a message, take a snapshot with your digital camera for reference later and make a few notes on the address, general outside appearance, landlord phone number and other information from the sign.
