With over 20 million residents and the second largest amount of land behind Alaska, Texas is one of America’s most fascinating states. However, beyond its vast amount of size and population, Texas is a state that attracts thousands of tourists and future residents. The process of finding a home in the Lone Star state is much like the process for finding housing in other major markets. It requires patience, research, and a little bit of luck. Below are some of the most popular cities in Texas along with each city’s median home price.
Houston
Houston is the fourth largest city in America, and the largest city in Texas. It is home to over 2.14 million diverse residents and has a variety of professional sports teams from every major discipline. Houston is also home to the famous Space Center Houston, which garnered even more fame when the first word transmitted from the moon was in fact: Houston. Residents in this cultural diverse city paid a median average of $149,900 for homes with new homes costing an average of $161,990.
Dallas
Keeping with the theme that things are in fact bigger in Texas, Dallas is the third most populated city in Texas and the ninth most populated in the United Stated with over 1.2 million residents. Dallas is also home to a variety of professional sports teams including the legendary Dallas Cowboys. This city is also the third most visited business destination, which brings in millions of additional dollars to the local economy. Located in the northwest portion of Texas, Dallas is not only a great city to build a business in, but also to raise a family as well. Prices for homes in Dallas range from an overall median of $210,000 and $239,477 for new homes.
San Antonio
Located in the southern half of Texas, San Antonio is the state’s second largest city and the nation’s seventh largest. Much like Houston, and Dallas, San Antonio has all the amenities one would expect from a large metropolitan city including the famous River Walk. The River Walk is an area that surrounds the downtown portion of the city where residents and visitors alike can stroll through shops, restaurants, and theaters. However, for most people, San Antonio is famous because of the Alamo. New home prices in San Antonio cost an average of $229,584 while the citywide average for all homes is an affordable $165,000.
Austin
Internationally known for its live music venues, Austin has garnered the reputation as the live music capital of the world. It is also the capital city of Texas and is the fourth-largest city in the state. Austin consistently enjoys a steady influx of both tourists and new residents alike. Austin is almost perfectly centrally located in the state and enjoys the benefit of bordering the Colorado River. To many, living in Austin is the perfect balance of metropolitan and rural living. It is more expensive than remote rural areas, but does have the benefits of a culturally rich city. Residents pay an average of $295,000 for their homes, with new homes costing $339,900.
Fort Worth
Located in north Texas, Fort Worth is the state’s firth largest city with a population of over 650,000 residents. While Fort Worth does not have a major sports team or a large media market, it does have a large amount of culture. For example, in 1892, Texas’ first art museum, the Modern Museum of Fort Worth, opened its doors. Today, Fort Worth houses not only a variety of art and history museums, but also a zoo, botanical garden and a famous downtown area named after the Sundance Kid. Home prices in Fort Worth are quite reasonable with new homes costing an average of $158,554 and overall homes costing $143,265. |
