No Credit Check Apartment

By Geoff McKenzie - HousingInfo.com         Apr 29,2007

Bad credit? No credit? Do you even know how good or bad your credit rating is? Many apartment rentals require you to go through a credit check before the landlord will sign a lease with you. That's bad news for folks who either have not had a chance to establish their credit or have screwed up their credit pretty badly in the past. If you're one of these people, you might want to look for a no credit check apartment.

What a No Credit Check Apartment Means For You

A no credit check apartment means that the landlord will let you sign a lease without worrying about your financial background. There are a couple of reasons a landlord might be willing to do this, so you'll want to pay attention. First of all, these rentals might be a great deal cheaper than the average apartment in your area. For the landlord offering these low-cost apartments, a credit check might not be worth the time and effort.

On the other hand, a landlord who offers a no credit check apartment might charge you more than the average apartment, since he or she is taking on far greater risk by not making sure you have the wherewithal to pay the bills before renting to you. In this case, you need to weigh your options carefully. How important is it for you to avoid the credit check? Can you explain some of the bad credit away? It might be worth it to search for apartments that do require a credit check. See how you do before painting yourself into a corner with a higher-cost, lower-quality apartment.

Check Out the Apartment Out Before Signing the Lease

It is incredibly important to check out the apartment before agreeing to sign a lease. You never know what you're getting until you check it out. A landlord might be more willing to tempt you with the offer of renting to you without checking your credit if he or she knows the apartment is in poor condition. That said, it's always worth it to consider all of your options (that may include a no-credit-check place or a place that requires a credit check). If your credit is not too bad, you might find a landlord who is willing to rent to you anyway.
