Get Control of Your Debt

by Sue Yee on February 1, 2009

Want to get control of your debt? You can! You never need to feel embarrassed or ashamed for owing money or feeing like you are falling behind. After all, it happens to the best of us. You may be dealing with a combination of debt, including credit cards, a mortgage and/or loans (education or otherwise).

How To Get Control of Your Debt

The best advice someone can give you to get control of your debt is to never pay your minimum balance. If you always pay the minimum balance each month, by the time the loan, mortgage or credit card is fully paid off, you may have paid double the original cost. If you can afford it, pay extra each and every month. You will need to survey your income and other monthly expenses to see just how much you can safely give to your debt each month.

Where’s the Money?

If you feel you are too strapped for cash, you may need to think about cutting back. Eliminate things you do not need. Believe us, every little bit adds up. Think that daily cup of joe on your way to work is only $3 a day? That doesn’t sound like much, does it? But how much is that in a month? If you work five days per week, that is an extra $60 a month you could put towards debt!

Even if that doesn’t sound like a lot to you, for someone in debt, everything counts. Try cutting out even more. You can still have your coffee. Brew it at home and take it in a travel mug. Or, wait until you get to work for your coffee fix. Think of all the little changes that can add up to help you get control of your debt.
