As you search through available property to rent, you may occasionally come across duplex rentals. Should you consider renting one of these? What are Duplexes? Depending on where you live, "duplex" can mean several different things. The term always refers to a building that is divided into just two units, so no matter what else it is, you know that you're only going to have one neighbor living in the same building as you. Types of Duplex Rentals Sometimes duplex rentals are made up of two apartments, one stacked on top of the other. But for the most part, when people talk about a duplex, they're referring to a side-by-side situation. These types of homes are common in all areas of the country. Sometimes a duplex doesn't refer to a home divided into two living units at all. In some areas, like Manhattan for example, a duplex is an apartment that is on two floors, with a staircase connecting them. The price for these properties can be fairly steep, so be sure you know what you're getting into before you sign on the dotted line. Before Choosing Duplex Rentals Before you rent one of these properties, you'll want to do the usual site visit, checking everything from the water pressure to the typical heating costs and the condition of the unit. If you decide that you are very interested in renting the duplex, ask if you can meet the occupant of the other unit first. Since this is going to be your only neighbor, it wouldn't hurt to make sure you can get along with them before committing to a long-term relationship as a close neighbor. |
