Moving is an integral part of your transition to a new home. The sooner in advance you start to think about moving, the easier your move will be. Here are a few basic ways you can make sure moving runs smoothly.
Early Moving Preparation
You should start thinking about your move as soon as your house is for sale. Have the supplies you need on hand including boxes, packing tape and packing peanuts. This is also a great time to sell, or giveaway, all that junk that's been collecting in the attic for years that you never know what to do with.
Once You Know Your Moving Date
Once you know the date you are moving, you can call your local utilities and services to have everything turned off at your old place the day you leave and turned on at your new place the same day. Make a list and check off each service as you handle it. You'll also want to make sure the post office has your change of address form and that creditors and magazine subscriptions are directed where to send their materials. It's also a good idea to note who you talked to and the exact times services are due to be turned on/off or disconnected/installed. It's also time now to hire a mover, or rent a moving van. An online search is a great way to find the right mover fast.
Moving Week
Make sure all your items are packed securely. Be sure to label not only what each box contains, but make a special, clear notation for boxes that contain fragile items. If you're moving yourself, make sure not to make any box too heavy. For example, hardcover books make a box heavy much faster than you might expect. You'll thank yourself if you have a small bag or box of necessary items that you can access right away once you get to your new home. |
