Temporary Housing Options

By Kevin Gudz - HousingInfo.com         Apr 10,2007

Sometimes you need a short-term place to live before you can move into your more permanent residence. You may need just  a few days, a solid week or two, or several months. Depending on your needs and your budget, there are several temporary housing options that are available to you.

You Have Several Temporary Housing Options

The first, and probably most obvious, choice is a regular hotel room. If you're moving across country and you know your new place is going to be available in just a couple of days, this might be a good way to go. You can get nice amenities, like housekeeping and room service, and you can be close to your future home. The one thing to keep in mind if you choose this option is that a regular hotel room comes with a higher price than some other options, which is why it's really best for the shortest stays.

The next option is an extended stay hotel. These places exist in many cities across the country, and it's a good spot to consider if you need to stay somewhere longer than just a couple of days. Generally, you'll get a kitchenette in your room (which can help you save money on eating out), and there may even be laundry facilities you can use. You don't have to worry about furnishing the place, but you also get most of the comforts of home.

If you're going to have to stay in temporary housing for at least a month, you might try searching for an apartment. There are many landlords who offer month-to-month leases, provided you let them know upfront how long you expect to stay. The drawback to this option is that the place might not be furnished. The benefit is you can settle in to a place that really feels a bit more comfortable, even though it's not your permanent home.

The top considerations to keep in mind when you're looking at temporary housing options are your budget, your space needs, location, amenities and available services.
