Three Quick Ways to Get Rid of Credit Card Debt

by Sue Yee on February 2, 2009

Credit card debt can creep up on even the best of us. The problem here is that you now have a loan that you are probably making minimum payments on while allowing ten percent or more interest to grow. Unfortunately, that growth works against you and not for you. If you find yourself in the situation of having a decent amount of credit card debt, there are three quick and easy ways to eliminate credit card debt for good.

Consolidate Your Credit Card Debt

Consolidating debt is one of the easiest ways to save your credit and reduce the amount of interest that is growing against your healthy financial budget. There are a couple of different ways that this can be accomplished. The first thing to consider is applying for a personal loan from your bank. If your credit is in good standing, you may be able to get a loan with an interest rate of ten percent or possibly less. This way, your credit report will reflect a couple of credit cards being paid off and you will in turn gain because you are paying a much less interest rate than most cards offer. You will have proved the ability to pay off debt and keep a revolving line of credit going. Another idea is to talk to your mortgage lender about a refinance, second mortgage or a home equity loan. Of course, here, you need to be a homeowner with a little equity room to play with in your loan. Just be sure that in today's housing market you do not enter into an adjustable rate mortgage because interest rates are on the rise. So consult with your local professional and they can help you decide which mortgage tool would best suit your personal needs.

Sacrifice and Rid Yourself of Useless Spending Habits

Developing a budget for yourself is one of the quickest ways to reduce that debt. Some simple suggestions that you should put into action today are: to grocery shop instead of eating out, stop your use of premium services such as packaged cable for your television and switch to basic. You may also want to consider making two credit card payments per month. Did you know that mathematically if you pay 25 percent more than your minimum payment you will alleviate any debt in half the time? What if with your first check of the month you made your minimum payment and then followed that up two weeks later with a payment half of what you originally sent in? That debt would soon be gone!

Find Part-Time Work

Of course this is not everyone's favorite topic yet it should be considered. No one really wants to work more than they already do, however, to get rid of debt it should be considered. Most towns have busy restaurants and if you work 15 to 20 hours per week as a server or bartender you may be able to earn a couple of hundred bucks each week. Now just think what that could do for your debt!
